KCPE Candidate Drowns As Two Students Die In River During Photoshoot
A 14-year-old KCPE student from Waita Primary School in Mwingi Central, Kitui County, drowned this evening at the Waita water-rock catchment dam.
Caxton Mutambuki, the deceased’s uncle, said tragedy struck around 5 p.m. while the girl was playing at the dam’s edge. She drowned after slipping and falling into the water while playing.
He stated that the girl had gone to get water with a friend after returning home from school, only to lose her life.
Mutambuki claimed that local divers were not present to assist her in saving her life. They were too late. He claimed that the divers assisted in the recovery of the schoolgirl’s body.
Police arrived on the scene, accompanied by the deceased’s relatives, and took the body to Mwingi level 4 hospital.
He urged the government to act quickly to prevent further deaths by erecting a perimeter fence around the dam.
He stated that at least six people have drowned at the dam in the recent past.

Two Michuki Technical Institute college students drown in river Mathioya during photoshoot
Two students from Michuki Technical Institute in Kangema, Murang’a County, drowned Sunday evening in the Mathioya River, where they had gone for a photoshoot.
The two, identified as Hellen and Dan, reportedly went for a leisurely walk along the river near a waterfall with the intention of photographing themselves.
Their happy moment was cut short when the girl fell into the river, prompting her friend to attempt to save her. Dan then fell into the river, and both of them drowned.
Residents’ efforts to save the two were futile once darkness descended on the area.
On Monday morning, Michuki Technical Institute students and residents camped along the river’s banks, waiting for the bodies to resurface.
One of the institute’s students, Paul Kalawa, said he spent the entire Sunday afternoon with the two before they went for a leisurely walk by the river.
“We didn’t know that things would turn out this tragic but I urge my colleagues to be careful and avoid this place,” Kalawa said.
The incident, according to college principal John Ndirangu, has dealt a significant blow to the institution, citing another incident in which a student drowned at the same location two years ago.
“It was an accident like any other because people always go there for photoshoots, only that the two became victims,” he said.

“I would urge the students to keep off this place for now because we would not like to lose more lives in such a manner,” Ndirangu added.
The incident comes just a week after three students from Gatanga’s Mabae Primary School drowned in the Kiama River.
