Kakamega County Teachers Shortage Hit 7000

Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has revealed that Kakamega County has the highest teacher shortage in the country.

He disclosed this information during a Board of Management meeting at Lumakanda Township Secondary School, where he is also a member of the National Assembly Education Committee.

The county reportedly needs over 7,000 teachers to attain its Curriculum Based Establishment, with Nabwera’s own constituency being the most affected among the 12 constituencies.

According to Nabwera, the inadequate staffing in secondary schools is a major factor that contributes to poor performance in his constituency. He assured the meeting that he would take action to resolve the problem soon.

Nabwera is engaging the Teachers Service Commission to address the issue, and Lugari has already received the highest number of teachers in the recent recruitment, although most of them were assigned to junior secondary schools.

He urged school principals to be patient as the commission sorts out staffing needs in junior secondary schools, as addressing this issue is crucial. He also called on school heads to manage growth in their respective schools based on available infrastructure.

Poor performance

Nabwera committed to transforming the poor performance of secondary schools in his constituency within the shortest time possible and appealed to all stakeholders to play their part in ensuring students get the desired results.

As part of the transformation agenda of the constituency’s education sector, in April, they plan to have an academic camp where the best male students will converge at Kivaywa High School and the females at Bishop Njenga Girls to interact with top-notch teachers.

The MP invested Sh5 million to take care of students’ tests and to motivate teachers and students. He also hopes to change the trend of producing Es, which Lugari has been leading in the county.

Overall, Nabwera’s comments highlight a serious issue facing Kakamega County and the need for urgent action to address the teacher shortage.

The shortage is having a direct impact on students’ learning outcomes, and addressing it should be a priority for education stakeholders in the county.

Nabwera’s commitment to transforming the education sector in his constituency and partnering with stakeholders to achieve good results is a step in the right direction.
