Kaimosi Friends University College (Kafuco) Awarded University Charter.
On Thursday, July 28, Kaimosi Friends University College (Kafuco) will be granted a university charter at State House in Nairobi, becoming the first in Vihiga County.
President Uhuru Kenyatta will preside over the ceremony, which will be attended by several education officials.
Principal Jack Nandi confirmed the news, stating that the college had been approved after several inspections by the Commission for University Education.
“We have been invited to attend the ceremony in Nairobi. We are first required at the Commission for University Education offices today (Wednesday) for rehearsal,” he said.
Prof Nandi stated that the college, which has been under the supervision of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology since its inception in September 2014, has met all requirements.
He stated that CUE approved the college for the charter after confirming that it can operate a fully chartered university.
“We are happy for this development. We are ready to transform into a fully-fledged university,” Prof Nandi said.
According to The Nation, Kafuco is one of eight university colleges that will receive charters at the State House event.
Alupe in Busia County, Kenya Defence Forces College, and Tharaka Nithi College are also notable.
According to reports, at least four private colleges are on the list of institutions to be upgraded.
Vihiga Senator George Khaniri broke the news about Kafuco receiving a charter earlier this year.
Mr Khaniri stated at the time that the county was on track to get its first chartered university before the August 9 elections.
Mr Khaniri has been at the forefront of the charter campaign, and in February this year, he presented President Kenyatta with a petition requesting that the college be upgraded to a full-fledged university.
Mr Khaniri then confirmed that Kafuco was on the verge of receiving the upgrade.
He stated at the time that Mr Kenyatta had assured him that CUE was completing all necessary procedures before the charter was formally awarded.
Kafuco, which opened in September 2014 on 100 acres of the Kaimosi education complex, has over 1,000 students.
Major infrastructure and administrative changes have been implemented at the college in preparation for the charter’s awarding.
Mr Khaniri stated that the college has all of the necessary facilities to be upgraded to a full-fledged university.
