Junior secondary schools (JSS) will have their Boards of Management (BOM), the Ministry of Education has revealed.

The BOM will be in charge of overseeing the schools’ operations and finances.

In addition to overseeing the high school wing’s financial management, the head teachers will also serve as the secretary of the junior secondary boards of management.

As is already the case for other high school learners, junior secondary school students will also get government capitation per child.

The Junior Secondary school board will be separate from the primary school board.

These specifics came to light as parents and teachers become increasingly concerned about the transition of Grade Six learners to Junior Secondary Schools.

The transition will occur less than two weeks before schools resume on January 23.

The subject of the readiness of laboratories to be used by Junior Secondary learners has become significant.

As development plans are implemented, President Ruto stated last week that some of these facilities might be shared with other schools in the interim.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development  (KICD) hosted a stakeholders meeting on January 4 when the finer details of the draft guidelines emerged.

CS Machogu convened a multi-agency panel, and its findings constitute the guidelines.

Machogu announced in his address during the release of the KCPE exam results last month that he had established a team to write transition guidelines.

According to Machogu, the team’s goals were to ensure a smooth transition from primary school in Grade Six to junior secondary school, facilitate effective leadership and management of junior secondary school, and promote consistency in the implementation of the junior secondary school curriculum, including teaching, learning, and assessment.
