Junior Secondary Guidelines on Uniforms Released: Why Schools are Changing Names
The Ministry of Education has released guidelines for the naming of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and the implementation of various measures for the rollout of JSS education.
According to the guidelines, schools are required to include “JSS” in their initials, and primary schools and JSS should have separate accounts for financial transactions.
The ministry proposed, by way of illustration, that if a primary school was once known as “Mwandapole Primary school,” its new name would be “Mwendapole School” (Primary and JSS).
Additionally, JSS leadership has been given the authority to determine uniforms for their schools in consultation with stakeholders, and uniforms should be sensitive to cultural and religious values.
Parents are responsible for purchasing uniforms, but JSS have been cautioned not to exclude students for failure to afford uniforms.
The government has also allocated a capitation grant of Ksh9.6 billion for JSS students, and has urged school headteachers and Boards of Management to use finances prudently for the benefit of JSS students.
“Further to this, out of Ksh15,000 that will be released for each learner, Ksh4,000 will be spent on the development of infrastructure with the greatest priority being on laboratories,” the Ministry added.
The government also urged parents to take responsibility for providing a conducive environment for their children to achieve their full potential.
“Parents have a shared responsibility with learning institutions to provide a conducive environment that motivates all learners to achieve their full potential,” read the Ministry of Education report.
