JSS Schools to Get Pending Text Books by March End

According to Sabina Aroni, the Director of Education for the Central Region in Kenya, all Grade 7 learners in over 2,000 Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the region will have access to all 12 textbooks by the end of March.

She stated that different distributors are distributing textbooks for the five core learning areas to most schools, while the remaining seven will be delivered in two weeks. Each distributor is responsible for handling a specific county.

Aroni made these remarks during a parents’ sensitization forum on the Competency Based Curriculum by Ministry of Education officials at Gikanja primary and junior secondary school.

She also clarified that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was deploying JSS tutors based on the number of streams hosted by the respective primary school.

However, she noted that the teachers’ employer deployed only 75 JSS tutors out of a total of 344 public Junior Secondary Schools registered in the county in Nyeri.

To cover the shortfall, Aroni encouraged school heads to make use of experienced teachers already working in the school to ease the workload for the newly recruited JSS teachers.

The region, which comprises Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyandarua and Nyeri Counties, has a total of 2,497 Junior Secondary schools, with 1,750 being public schools and 747 private schools.

Capitation

The government has put in place strategies to resolve any emerging issues affecting the full implementation of the new Competency Based Curriculum, and the children are in safe hands, assured Aroni.

Dr Peter Munene, the Central Region Director of Education, also addressed the issue of capitation, stating that JSS in the region should expect capitation by the end of that week. Most schools hosting JSS spent the better part of the previous week opening bank accounts as directed by the ministry’s circular.

The government has allocated KES 9.6 billion as first-term capitation for Grade 7 learners yet to hit school accounts.
