Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has indicated that the government will not dismantle boarding schools.

On Monday, January 16, Machogu confirmed that there were no plans to eliminate boarding schools when presiding over the release of form one placement at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

However, Machogu added that boarding schools needed to implement day programs to save operational costs.

The Chief of Staff added that the measure will enhance access to the institutions for all students enrolled in the CBC curriculum.

“I encourage all boarding schools to implement day wings in order to increase access and reduce educational costs, which is also consistent with the CBC,” Machogu stated.

In response to the issue of facilitating the provision of education to students, the Cabinet Secretary stated that the government will provide medical coverage for students registered with the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

This, according to Machogu, will ensure that learners at boarding schools remain comfortable and reduce medical costs for their parents and guardians.

“We will also supply sanitary goods to the students to cut costs and ensure their comfort at school,” Machogu continued.

Principal Secretary of Basic Education Belio Kipsang announced the abolition of the boarding system for students in grades 1 through 9 on Tuesday, December 6, and stated that the plan will be implemented in early 2023.

“The only way to be with our children is through day schooling, so we must find a way to implement that,” Kipsang noted.

However, on Wednesday, December 7, The PS stated that the abolition in dry and semi-arid regions would enable parents to seek out means of subsistence and grazing for their livestock.

“When their parents go out to look for pasture, we want to ensure the children are in school, “ Kipsang added.
