JKUAT Denies Two Students Committed Suicide Due To Missing Marks
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has confirmed that two of its students were found dead in suspected suicides.
The institution acknowledged the deaths of Lenny Jessy Masiga and Irene Monica Wagichugu in a statement issued by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Dr. Joan Mutua.
Despite the fact that the bodies of the two students were discovered in their external hostels, JKUAT dismissed claims that their deaths were caused by missing grades.
The university stated that the two students’ academic records were satisfactory and urged the police to expedite their investigation into their deaths.
“JKUAT urges the national police service to expedite investigations on the alleged suicide by JKUAT students that was reportedly triggered by claims of ‘missing marks,‘” wrote Dr. Mutua.
“We wish to confirm that Lenny Jessy Masiga and Irene Monica Wagichugu Mwangi were JKUAT students pursuing Strategic Management in the School of Entrepreneurship and BSc Business Computing respectively and that their relevant academic records arc in order.”
According to police reports, their bodies were discovered in their respective hostels outside JKUAT, namely Maya Apartment, Kenyatta Road, and Kwa Njoro Area 2.
JKUAT also tried to distance itself from a third person who died under similar circumstances, claiming she was not a student there.

“Further, we wish to clarify that Lucy Wambui, who is also said to have died by suicide in Kiambu County, is not a student of JKUAT,” added Dr. Mutua.
“JKUAT is committed to the wellbeing of its students. This extends to providing comprehensive mental health services through in-house university counselors and organizing students’ initiatives within and without the university.”
