Intern Teachers to Serve Two Years Before Getting Permanent Jobs

Intern teachers on a one-year contract will now be obliged to serve a second year before being approved as permanent and pensionable staff.

Last Monday, President William Ruto announced an extension of the internship period, assuring Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers of ultimate permanent employment.

He did, however, state that this would take place only after their two-year internship.

Ruto’s remarks, made during a media round-table at the State House, garnered both acclaim and criticism, with concerns about teachers’ morale and potential delays in obtaining steady jobs.

“The JSS intern teachers will be at work in January,” Ruto said. He added, “We had promised that before being employed on permanent and pensionable terms, they must do an internship for two years.”

The two-year internship policy is part of a larger government drive to promote internships in a broad range of sectors.

He mentioned that the Public Service Commission recently welcomed a new cohort of interns, highlighting the importance of internships in the learning and career processes.

According to President Ruto, every Intern teacher will be hired. “We will hire everybody so they need to relax. Let them go through the process and will have the first priority when we hire teachers after the internship.”

He assured that intern Teachers will receive first priority when hiring teachers. According to Ruto the internship program extends beyond teachers to various other sectors.

This news comes on the heels of previous pronouncements made by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in November, which formalized the two-year service requirement for JSS interns.

Antonina Lentoijoni, the commission’s Director of Teachers Staffing, indicated that after two years, the contracts of the approximately 46,000 JSS interns would automatically change to permanent and pensionable (PNP) status.

Concerns have been raised by 21,365 junior school interns who were hired. They protest the renewal of their contracts in their current form.
