Inside CS Kuria’s Proposal to Absorb NYS Graduates in TVET

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria proposed on Friday, February 23, that graduates from the National Youth Service (NYS) should be absorbed into Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

The aim is to equip these graduates with the necessary skills for the job market. During the admission ceremony for NYS recruits from all 1,400 wards nationwide, Kuria, speaking to the audience, confirmed that he was in discussions with the Council of Governors to make this proposal a mandatory practice.

Kuria emphasized that the integration of NYS graduates into TVETs would provide them with opportunities for additional courses and better preparation for jobs secured by President William Ruto abroad. Last year, President Ruto had directed that Kenyans seeking employment overseas undergo training before deployment.

“I’m also in discussion with the Council of Governors to have all the TVETs across the country absorb these graduates when they complete their courses and make sure they benefit from extra courses in those institutions for the readiness of our job export programs,” he stated.

Additionally, Kuria reiterated that the selection process for these graduates was rigorous to ensure transparency and fairness. He mentioned that over 8,000 individuals had been selected, with the number expected to rise to over 15,000 at Gilgil and in Naivasha by Monday.

“We had to make sure that all those who underwent the recruitment program are those who graduated today,” he stated, emphasizing the need for graduates from every ward across the country.

To prevent corruption and ensure a fair process, Kuria pointed out the importance of using biometrics in the registration of NYS recruits across all wards. He commended the measures in place to guarantee a continuous, free, and fair onboarding process for newly recruited NYS officers in various paramilitary colleges nationwide.

Kuria expressed his commitment to extending this initiative to every sector, emphasizing the importance of a transparent and corruption-free process.
