Manyani Maximum Security Prison in Taita Taveta County was ecstatic when an inmate was acquitted after posting outstanding Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results.
Juma Nyasi took the KCPE exams this year and received 401 marks, placing her among the top candidates in the county.
The inmate had been sentenced to life in prison for assaulting a three-year-old boy. In his defense, Juma denied the allegations, claiming that he had been wrongfully accused.

Juma Nyasi took the KCPE exams this year and received 401 marks, placing her among the top candidates in the county.
He was acquitted of the charges, however, after Justice John Mativo ordered his release due to a lack of evidence.
“I am so happy. I cannot express how I am feeling right now. My focus is now on my education,” he told the media.
After his charges were dropped, the 28-year-old inmate couldn’t keep his emotions in check.
“I sat the KCPE exams at Kale Primary School in 2009 but dropped out of secondary school in 2011 after my sponsor passed on,” he stated.
Juma, who was sentenced in March 2021, decided to focus on his education as part of his rehabilitation.
He was sitting the KCPE exams for the second time after dropping out of secondary school years before due to a lack of fees.
“Right now, I don’t know where I will get my school fees from, but God will provide. I am sending requests here and there to see whether I can get sponsors to fund my education,” he noted.
Juma pleaded with well-wishers to come to his aid and fund the remainder of his education. He also requested that other basic necessities be provided for him.

He highlighted the prison life system, revealing that inmates can only access basic education programs that do not include secondary school curriculum.
He stated that with a better system and resources, inmates can learn to fend for themselves once they have served their sentences.
“As inmates prepare to return to society, they can be good citizens and improve their lives,” he said.
