Huawei and UNESCO Collaborate to Enhance School Enrollment
Huawei and UNESCO have teamed up to promote access to formal education under the TECH4ALL initiative.
The project, named Technology-enabled Open Schools for All, aims to address the immediate schooling needs of over 20,000 students and more than one million teachers in three African countries, including Ghana and Kenya.
The initiative, outlined in the latest digital inclusion report, is part of Huawei’s exploration and innovation in using technology to improve digital skills and boost the digital transformation of education, particularly for underserved groups in rural and remote areas.
Huawei’s President of ICT Marketing, Jeffrey Zhou, stated that open schools are quickly gaining popularity globally as the gross enrollment ratio for secondary education is still only 76%.
Achieving universal secondary education requires solutions that go beyond brick-and-mortar structures, and open schooling is a cost-effective approach that uses open, distance, and online methods to scale up access to reach more people.
It can provide skills for employment and entrepreneurship and can be conducted on a large scale.
According to Dr. Fengchun Miao, Chief of Unit for Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Education for UNESCO, digital open schooling models are a manifestation of the digital transformation of school education.
It is an open approach to reinventing schooling systems to ensure that school education, including knowledge learning, skills development, fostering of values, and social care, is guaranteed even under normal and emergency situations.
So far, over 220,000 secondary school teachers, more than 600 schools, and particularly students in remote areas, have benefited from the TECH4ALL program.
The TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion special report shares the diverse visions, strategies, and best practices of global experts and partners in 15 stories set out in three sections: Insights, Technology in Focus, and Case Studies.
Through partnerships and technology, the TECH4ALL initiative has been able to provide open schooling and other educational opportunities to underserved groups.
By using open, distance, and online methods, it has been able to overcome the challenges of physical infrastructure and reach more people cost-effectively.
The initiative is contributing to the digital transformation of education and helping to achieve universal access to education, particularly in remote and rural areas.
