How UoN Empowered Male Students – Kiama

Stephen Kiama, the Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nairobi, has stated that the male students in the institution have been facing challenges that have been undermining their academic performance.

Speaking at an event celebrating the boy child, Kiama shared the measures he had implemented to restore the glory of male students at the university.

Upon assuming his role as Vice-Chancellor in 2020, Kiama discovered that over 500 male students had been expelled from the institution due to various crimes.

To address this issue, the university management put in place several measures aimed at correcting this menace.

One of the measures that Kiama initiated through the Senate was the Pardon Advisory Committee (PAC) in collaboration with the Students Appeals and Disciplinary Committee (SADC).

This program was aimed at rehabilitating and reinstating wayward male students who had been expelled from the institution.

Kiama reported that the university had managed to re-admit 344 male students whom they had given to the Academic Division and Dean of Students Office for rehabilitation, mentorship, and release.

In addition, the university registered over 1,000 students in the Work Study Program, which provided them with custodian, cleaning, security, customer care assistant, gardening, library assistant, and office administrator jobs.

Kiama noted that the Work Study Program had brought a sense of responsibility to the male students, which was crucial for their academic performance.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the university was committed to ensuring that male students were given the necessary support to succeed academically.

The institution’s management has initiated programs such as the Pardon Advisory Committee (PAC) and the Work Study Program to rehabilitate and mentor wayward male students and provide them with employment opportunities to foster a sense of responsibility.
