How TSC Will Train 60,000 Teachers On CBC.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) intends to train 60,000 tutors on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in advance of its implementation in junior secondary schools in January.
The target group, according to a circular issued by TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia on Friday, is teachers in Grades 7, 8, and 9 from public regular and special needs schools, as well as private institutions.
The first level of training will focus on language teachers, pure science teachers, applied science teachers, mathematics teachers, humanities teachers, and technical subject teachers.
“The cascade model requires that the master trainers to train the trainers of trainers (ToTs)and thereafter offer professional support during the face-to-face teachers training at county and sub-county levels,” Mrs Macharia said.
She went on to say that the training would start on April 25 and end on May 13. The master trainers will physically train the ToTs for four days.
According to the TSC circular, the ToTs will then train teachers face-to-face for four days while strictly adhering to the Ministry of Health Covid-19 prevention guidelines.
The ToTs training will take place from May 2 to 6, while the teacher training will begin on May 9 and end on May 13.
“Teachers will be clustered to departments during the training,” Ms Macharia said.
For the training, each secondary school will be required to nominate six teachers from the languages, pure sciences, applied sciences, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects.
English, Kiswahili, foreign and indigenous languages, and Kenya Sign Language instructors will be trained.
Teachers will be trained in integrated science, biology, chemistry, physics, and health education for the pure sciences.
Agriculture, home science, and computer studies are among the subjects taught in applied sciences. Teachers will be trained in social studies (citizenship, geography, history,) religious studies, and life skills while studying humanities.
Pre-vocational and pre-career subjects include technical and creative arts, business studies, music, sports and physical education, and home science.
“The ToTs will train regular teachers at sub-county level and the special needs education teachers at county level,” Mrs Macharia said.
