The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has clarified the countrywide mass recruitment of teachers that was announced a few days ago.
The commission clarified the selection of primary school teachers to fill the advertised vacancies in a statement issued on Wednesday, January 26.
TSC, led by Dr Nancy Macharia, stated that teachers will be chosen from a list of candidates from a previous recruitment process held in July 2021.
“In the January 2022 advertisement on natural attrition, primary school teachers will be selected from the merit list compiled during the recruitment of additional teachers-July 2021,” read the statement in part.
On January 19, the commission announced the hiring of 2,945 new teachers. The teachers will replace those who left the service due to natural attrition.
The commission’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nancy Macharia, advertised 2,053 positions for primary school teachers and 892 positions for secondary school teachers.
TSC announced 9,000 vacancies in July 2021, attracting 350,000 applicants who were interviewed for a week by interview panels spread across the country.
In September, the commission announced the names of the candidates it had chosen.
In this context, primary school teachers will be chosen from a list of candidates who were not chosen from the shortlist. However, secondary school teacher recruitment will continue as planned.
TSC recruits teachers on a regular basis to replace primary and secondary school teachers who leave the service for a variety of reasons. In some cases, most teachers have fallen victim to conmen’s schemes that ‘guarantee’ them jobs.

In line with this, the commission launched an online application platform to protect applicants from scammers in a country where unemployment is on the rise.
According to TSC, there is a 100,000-person teacher shortage across the country. To close the gap, Knut proposed hiring at least 20,000 teachers each year.
