How to Make NSSF Contributions Through USSD & eCitizen Platforms
In early February 2023, the government implemented a revision to the mandatory National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions, altering the rate from Ksh200. The transition to a graduated plan is set to eventually encompass up to 6% of Kenyan employees’ salaries.
Despite the government’s announcement of the new rates, one year into the implementation of the NSSF Act, 2013, Kenyan employers find themselves in a state of confusion regarding the changes and the required deductions.

Since February 2022, employees earning Ksh6,000 have been contributing Ksh360 to the scheme, while those earning Ksh18,000 and above have contributed 1,080, an amount matched by the employer.
Anticipating these changes, the average deduction an employer can make from their workers’ payslips varies between Ksh420 and Ksh1,740. The NSSF is categorized into two sections based on employee earnings: Lower Earnings Limit and Upper Earnings Limit.
The Lower Earnings Limit, considered the minimum pensionable salary, was raised from Ksh6,000 to Ksh7,000. Employees in this category will now remit Ksh420, up from the previous Ksh360.
Simultaneously, the Upper Earnings Limit increased from Ksh18,000 to Ksh29,000, leading to a worker contribution of Ksh1,740, up from Ksh1,080.
Each employee’s contribution in both categories must be matched by the employer. The new charges aim to generate Ksh1 trillion over the next five years.
