Higher Education Funding: Your Guide to Eligibility and Application

As KCSE 2022 students prepare to enroll in colleges and universities, the government has unveiled a new financing model that exempts students with financial hardships from paying any fees to colleges and universities, as well as for their upkeep.

Any student who had not applied for financial aid before the implementation of this new funding paradigm will be required to do so via the new platform.

Important to note is that continuing students will continue to receive financing based on the Government’s existing model and will not be affected by this funding model.

In this blog post, we’ll break down the eligibility criteria for scholarships and loans, making it easier for you to navigate the application process and secure the funding you need for your educational journey.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) offers scholarships to qualified students without the requirement of a National ID card.

To be eligible, you must have taken the 2022 KCSE examination or a subsequent year and have gained admission to a university through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Loan Assistance

For those seeking loans, HELB provides financial support for higher education. To qualify, you must possess a National ID or KCSE index number and have received admission to a university or an approved TVET institution recognized by the Ministry of Education.

Application Checklist for Scholarships and Loans

Are you ready to kickstart your journey towards higher education with the support of HELB? Here’s a handy checklist to ensure you have everything you need for a successful application:

For University and TVET Education:

  1. Your parent’s or guardian’s national ID Number: You’ll need this essential piece of information.
  2. Your parent’s or guardian’s registered telephone number: Make sure you have this contact number on hand.
  3. Your Birth Certificate: A copy of your birth certificate is required for verification.
  4. Death Certificate (if applicable): If either of your parents is deceased, provide the necessary documentation.
  5. Two guarantors ID Numbers and Registered Telephone Numbers (for loan applications): Identify two individuals who can vouch for you and provide their ID numbers and contact details.
  6. Copy of the Sponsorship Letter (if applicable): If you were sponsored during your secondary school education, include a copy of the sponsorship letter.

Remember, the application process is straightforward, and applications are completely FREE. You can access the application portal at www.hef.co.ke.

Important Note:

The allocation of loans and scholarships is based on the applicant’s level of need, as determined by the Means Testing Instrument.

For undergraduate students, admission to public universities is required.

For TVET students, admission to approved TVET institutions and placement by KUCCPS are necessary. It’s not limited to 2022 KCSE graduates.

All applications must be submitted through the official website, www.hef.co.ke.

If you qualify for both loans and scholarships, we encourage you to select both options when submitting your application.
