The education system will feel the far-reaching repercussions of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) reforms, and it will take a long time for them to take effect.

At the heart of the reforms is a move from knowledge-based education to skill-based learning initiatives. This requires a mental paradigm shift. Teaching strategies, grading, and the transition from one grade to the next will differ from the 8-4-4 system.

In this context, one of the areas targeted for significant improvement is teacher education. The content, skills, and methods of teaching are evolving. The delivery of the curriculum will necessitate a higher degree of cognitive ability and the adoption of novel instructional strategies.

In a similar fashion, the authorities have raised the entry criteria for teacher training colleges to require a minimum grade of C on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam, and they have also elevated the qualification from a certificate to a diploma.

However, all of these have implementation issues. First, it implies that the teaching profession will now target the highest-achieving high school students.

The colleges must improve their training programs. The administration has certainly designed a new curriculum for teacher training colleges.

New accreditations

Firstly, hiring college-educated teachers promptly is necessary to prevent the waste that exists in the country.

Secondly, increasing the compensation of teachers to reflect their new qualifications and competencies is essential. Achieving these loftier goals requires a substantial amount of effort.

To ensure that we have the quality of teachers needed to apply the new curriculum, we should expand and update teacher training colleges.

Teachers-in-training colleges (TTCs) must update the skills of their instructors in order to generate high-quality educators.

Likewise, the government must initiate work on new recruitment, deployment, and remuneration mechanisms for teachers. This is what will encourage more people to become teachers. When employment is not secured and salary is poor, it does not make sense for a top high school candidate to seek a career in teaching.

Therefore, innovations in teacher education must be complemented by additional incentives.
