HELB: How to Withdraw Upkeep Funds via Mobile Money.

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has issued a notice on how beneficiaries can withdraw upkeep funds through mobile money platforms. This comes after loan applications have hit one million mark.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 27, HELB said beneficiaries can access their upkeep funds by using the self-service USSD code *642#. The Board noted that the mobile money account used for withdrawal must be registered under the beneficiary’s official name and national identification number.

HELB further clarified that upkeep funds will only be accessible after beneficiaries receive a second Sure Pay confirmation message. Each withdrawal transaction will cost Ksh15.

Withdrawal Procedure
Here’s how beneficiaries can withdraw upkeep funds:

  1. Dial *642# to access the self-service menu.
  2. Register and select a memorable PIN.
  3. Dial *642# again to log in.
  4. Select the “withdraw funds” option.
  5. Choose the “upkeep” option and select the amount to withdraw.
  6. Enter the mobile money account PIN to complete the transaction.
  7. Wait for a confirmation message from the mobile money service provider.

This comes after HELB announced changes to the disbursement of upkeep funds for continuing university and college students who applied for subsequent loans.

In its earlier communication issued on Thursday, August 8, HELB said while the scholarship component of the loan had not been removed, it would henceforth be processed separately from the upkeep disbursements.

“HELB has changed the structure of allocations. The scholarship has not been removed; it has just been separated from your upkeep and will be processed differently,” the Board stated.
