HELB Extends First-Time Loan Applications Deadline; Requirements & How to Apply

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced an extension for first-time applications under the new funding model.

The application portal will now be open until October 7, 2023.

How to Apply as a First-Time Applicant:

  • Begin by accessing the Student Portal (via http://hef.co.ke) and click on the “create an account” option to register.

  • Once your account is successfully created, log in and choose the appropriate Form eg. (TVET First Time Loan Application Form [TLAF])
  • Engage in financial literacy by reading relevant literature or watching educational videos, followed by participating in a brief online exercise.
  • Proceed to access and complete the loan application form.
  • Print two copies of the fully filled-out TVET Loan Application Form, which is mandatory.
  • Ensure that the forms are properly filled out, signed, and stamped by the appropriate authorities.
  • Attach all the required documents as per the provided checklist.

  • Submit one copy of the duly filled-out Loan Application Form at either:
    • Any of the designated Huduma centers closest to your location (Bomet, Bungoma, Chuka, Eldoret, Embu, Garissa, Nairobi GPO, Kakamega, Kericho, Kilifi, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitale, Kitui, Lodwar, Machakos, Makueni, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Thika, and West Pokot) for free and secure delivery;
    • HELB Student Service Center on Mezzanine 1, Anniversary Towers, University Way, Nairobi
  • Keep a complete copy of the TVET Loan Application Form for your records.

Important Notes:

  • Please ensure that you carefully read, comprehend, and follow the instructions provided at the start of the online loan application process, including participating in the HELB Financial Literacy Program.
  • It is advisable for students to responsibly manage their HELB loans once disbursed, covering tuition, books, stationery, accommodation, and living expenses.

Application Requirements:

  1. A copy of your admission letter from the institution.
  2. A copy of your National Identification Card.
  3. Your KCSE result slip or certificate.
  4. Copies of both parents’ National ID Cards or a death certificate if either parent is deceased.
  5. Copies of both guarantors’ National ID cards
  6. A copy of your Bank ATM or bank card.
  7. One recent colored passport-size photograph of yourself.
