The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced the commencement of its online application process, inviting qualified students to apply for student loans.

This initiative aims to provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education.

HELB emphasized the significance of this opportunity and urged applicants to submit their applications before the deadline.

Personal Information
  • A working phone number and email address.
  • Examination years and index numbers for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
  • A passport-sized photo in jpeg, jpg, or png format.
Documentation
  • A PDF copy of both sides of the candidate’s Maisha card or national identification card.
  • For those under 18, a PDF copy of the birth certificate is required instead of an ID card.
  • Secondary school sponsorship recipients must submit a sponsorship letter in PDF format.
Financial Information
  • Legitimate bank information or a registered MPESA number under the applicant’s name and ID number to facilitate fund distribution.

The application portal was activated following a directive from the Education Cabinet Secretary. Five days prior, CS Machogu had instructed HELB and the Universities Fund (UF) to open the Higher Education Funding portal for eligible students to apply for financial aid.

He indicated that the funding application results would be announced on July 31, 2024.

Requirements for Specific Courses

Applicants must meet additional criteria if they are pursuing specific courses such as nautical science and marine engineering. These include:

  • Craft certificate or diploma in nautical science and marine engineering.
  • Proficiency in STCW Courses.
  • Certificates or diplomas from METI approved by KMA, or relevant sea experience.
  • A CDC (Seafarers Discharge Record Book and Certificate)/Seaman’s book.

How to Apply for HELB Loans

  1. Login to the HELB Student Portal: Visit www.helb.co.ke.
  2. Complete the Form: Fill out the appropriate form based on whether you are pursuing an Academic, Proficiency, or Competency course.
  3. Ensure Accuracy: Ensure the form is properly filled, signed, and stamped by the relevant authorities and guarantors.
  4. Print Application Forms: Print two copies of the completed application form.
  5. Submit Required Documents: Submit one copy of the application form with necessary documents at the nearest Huduma Center or Anniversary Towers.
  6. Retain a Copy: Keep one copy of the duly filled loan application form for personal records.

By following these steps and ensuring all requirements are met, applicants can effectively apply for HELB student loans to support their educational endeavors.
