Headteacher Attributes 150 Admission Exams, Boarding School For 406 KCPE Mean Score.
Jonathan Nguta, the headteacher of Ultimate Leader Muumandu Hills Academy, believes that exposing students to examinations will minimize anxiety and panic during national exams.
According to Nguta, children who enroll in private schools in the county of Machakos are required to take 150 examinations.
The school that registered 17 candidates for the KCPE examinations in 2022 achieved an average score of 406.
“We give them 150 exams that we do in Standard eight; three exams per week. The school has a pupil population of 400. We do exams every Saturday and Sunday too,” he said.
According to him, 15 of the 17 achieved a score of 400 or above, with the remaining scoring 397.
Ryan James, the highest-scoring candidate, scored 422 marks. The top student in the school earned 413 marks. Adabella Mutheu and Briana Mwikali both scored 413 marks. Another student scored 398 marks.
“Many people are calling asking the secret of our great performance in these examinations. This isn’t our first KCPE class, in 2021 we had a mean score of 401 and we have improved by five marks,” Nguta said.
Nguta stated that teachers cover the curriculum early, prior to March. According to him, this was made feasible by the effective use of academic time made available by the Education ministry’s calendar.
According to him, teachers who teach candidates spend the majority of their time with the students. According to Nguta, every student at the school is a boarder.
“We are asking the government to consider the importance of boarding schools, they shouldn’t be abolished.“
"We are requesting that the government recognize the value of boarding schools, as they should not be eliminated.”
According to him, school administration always ensures that teachers are inspired.
“They aren’t teaching because of money, but because they like their profession and they discuss with pupils during free time,” Nguta said.
“After teaching and giving pupils examples in a model of 5 – 10 minutes, we expect a teacher to put children in groups and discuss in their own language, child language.
“You can’t teach in adult language and expect children to understand everything for them to excel in their examinations. We have worked 100 per cent to ensure both pupils and teachers are motivated.“
According to him, the school serves meals to stimulate students, as well as tea and cigarettes.
