Grade 7 Students to Study Consumer Rights – KICD.

More than 7 million learners who will enter seventh grade in January will study consumer rights.

The introduction of this notion in the curriculum is intended to raise students’ awareness at a young age.

Learners will have adequate knowledge of consumer rights and competition by the time they graduate from high school.

This is the result of a collaboration between the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Kenya Competition Authority.

Charles Ongondo, the chief executive officer of KICD, stated that consumer rights-related studies are exclusively included in business classes.

According to Ongondo, introducing students to consumer rights at a young age cultivates a sense of responsibility.

“By mainstreaming them in the curriculum, we shall equip our young citizens with the requisite knowledge, skills and values to safeguard them from exploitation by unscrupulous business persons and organisations,” he said.

The general director of the authority, Wang’ombe Kariuki, stated that the goal of the collaboration is to expose the concepts to young children.

The information, according to Kariuki, will assist learners in making educated decisions as adults.

“Especially when faced with different products and services due to increased competition and market complexities,” he said.

The concepts will be incorporated into home science and business studies from the elementary through secondary levels.

Learners will engage in both formal and informal endeavors.

Students will identify consumer issues in their community and debate potential solutions as part of the learning activities.

This takes the shape of drama, music, spoken word, and dance, as well as community visits.

KICD has already included the concepts into the Grade 7 and Grade 8 curriculum designs that will be introduced in January.

This means that when teachers and parents receive the seventh-grade textbooks, they will be able to access the relevant material.

In 2024 and 2025, the same concepts will be taught in at least twenty eighth- and ninth-grade subjects, and thereafter in more than thirty subjects at the senior secondary level (Grades 10, 11, and 12).

According to the KICD plan for seventh grade, learners will have 45 lessons per week, each lasting 7 minutes.

14 subjects, of which 12 are required, will be studied by JSS learners.

In addition to the indigenous language, English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Health Education, Pre-Technical and Pre-Career, Social Studies, Religious Education, Business Studies, Agriculture, Life Skills Education, Physical Education/Sports, and Foreign Languages (German, French, and Mandarin) will be introduced as elective subjects.

Computer Science and Performing/Visual Arts will also be offered as electives.

With five classes each week, English, Mathematics, and Social Studies have been assigned the most class time.
