Govt Urges Parents to Enroll Youths to TVETs
Felix Kosgei, chief of staff and head of the public service, has urged parents to enroll their children in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions in order to equip them with the skills necessary to obtain global employment.
Kosgei stated during the 9th graduation ceremony of over 2,500 students at Ol’lessos Technical Training Institute (OTTI) in Nandi that it was the responsibility of the government to support TVETs so that they could equip youth with the innovative skills necessary for the global labor market.
He stated that the government was working to ensure that the TVET curriculum aligns with the needs and standards of the country.
He advised the graduands on how to venture into the employment market, stating that with technical skills, one can own enterprises, companies, and industries. He also mentioned that although there are jobs available, being creative, disciplined, focused, and organized is crucial. He emphasized the importance of developing a culture of employing oneself with the skills acquired.
Further, he stated that TVET institutions promote integration because students come from all over the country, thereby fostering unity.
“When youths join TVET institutions they meet and interact with people from different backgrounds. This breaks barriers of tribalism and ethnicity,” he added.
Esther Muhoria, assistant secretary in the state department of Vocational and Technical colleges, stated that TVET principals have been instructed to restructure their curriculum to place a greater emphasis on youths’ technical skills that they can apply to a variety of jobs performed by foreigners.
“Government has identified TVET institutions as the channels through which youths acquire innovative skills for adaptation,” stated Muhoria.
She added that technical institutes will offer dual trainings that will allow students to obtain dual certifications, enabling them to work internationally.
PS Muhoria further directed that skilled youths without certificates be evaluated and certified at TVETs in order for them to be employed on better terms both domestically and internationally.
She explained that there were skilled youths who didn’t have certificates, and she wanted to encourage them to go to their TVETs (Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions) to be assessed and get certified. This would enable them to be employed in better positions and on better terms.
