Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has launched the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal for the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.

This portal enables all 869,782 candidates to enroll in any institution of their choice.

Among them, 173,127 candidates who achieved a minimum entry grade of C+ will be eligible for degree courses, while those with a grade of C and below will be absorbed by Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutions (TVET) across the country.

CS Machogu emphasized that all institutions have fulfilled the necessary requirements to enroll students and have published the fees for different study programs on their websites.

This information will assist students in making choices based on their household income levels.

Once selected, students will have the opportunity to apply for government scholarships from the University fund, as well as access the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) for government loans.

However, government scholarships will only be available for students joining public universities, while those opting for private universities can only apply for government loans.

The objective is to ensure that every student is treated according to their level of need and that deserving students are not denied the opportunity to pursue higher education in the institution of their choice.

The funding model categorizes students into three levels of need: vulnerable, less vulnerable, and able.

Approximately 45,000 students from needy and vulnerable backgrounds will have their full education costs covered by the government.

Students from less needy households will receive scholarships covering up to 53% of their costs and loans covering up to 40%.

Able students will receive funding up to a maximum of 38% as scholarships and 55% as loans.

TVET students will receive funding of 32% through scholarships and 48% through loans.

CS Machogu has instructed KUCCPS to partner with the Huduma secretariat, enabling students to apply for placements at all Huduma Centres across the nation.

This collaboration aims to provide guidance and assistance to students during the application process.

The application period is expected to be completed by August, allowing students to begin their studies at their respective universities in September.

This initiative by the Kenyan government aims to ensure equal access to higher education for all students based on their academic achievements and economic backgrounds.

By providing scholarships and loans, the government is striving to support students in pursuing their desired courses and achieving their educational goals.
