Govt Revises Birth Certificate Application and Replacement Fees

On April 2nd, the Kenyan government made an announcement regarding changes to the application process and associated fees for birth certificates.

In order to obtain a new or replacement birth certificate, there will now be four different charges depending on the nature of the application and whether any amendments are needed.

The government agency responsible for this process, Huduma Kenya, has provided further details on the application process and eligibility requirements.

For Kenyans who need a birth certificate without any amendments, the fee is Ksh60 to apply.

However, if any amendments are required, such as changes to the child’s name or one of the parent’s names, an additional fee of Ksh40 will be charged.

If the amendments apply to both the child’s and parent’s names, the fee will be Ksh140.

It is important to note that all applications must be made manually across the countrywide branches of Huduma Kenya. However, those residing in Nairobi have the option to apply online through the E-Citizen portal for an extra fee of Ksh180.

According to the government’s announcement, only two types of people are eligible to apply for a birth certificate through Huduma Centres: parents or guardians of a newly born baby, and rescue centres or children’s homes taking charge of the child.

In addition, certain requirements must be met in order to apply for a birth certificate. These include a birth notification from the hospital of delivery and an Identity Card for both parents.

If the parents are deceased, the person making the application must provide the death certificates of the parents.

Huduma Kenya has stated that it takes 10 days to receive a birth certificate after making an application. These changes to the application process and fees are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline and modernize its services.
