The State Department for Higher Education and Research has announced the launch of eight courses at The Open University of Kenya (OUK), which will be offered online at affordable rates.
The university will utilize technology to make learning flexible and to expand access to university education cost-effectively.
The aim is to produce graduates who are critical thinkers, practical-oriented, creative, and innovative, leading in academia, research, and leadership in the public and private sectors for socio-economic transformation nationally, regionally, and globally.
During its first phase, the university will offer degree and diploma courses in different technical areas, including Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Technology Education, Business and Entrepreneurship, Data Science, Economics and Statistics, and Agri-technology and Food Systems.
It will also offer postgraduate diploma courses in Leadership and Accountability, and Learning Design and Technology.
To prepare for the launch, the Ministry of Education invited a consultancy exercise to articulate program learning outcomes, identify and sequence courses within the various program architectures, and help experts research and create original content for individual courses.
The consultancy will incorporate various delivery support materials such as case studies, simulations, webinars, videos, practical exercises, journal articles, and other references.
Although the university was not launched within President William Ruto’s 100-day plan, plans are at an advanced stage. The Open University of Kenya seeks to draw on flexible entry criteria as well as a variety of cutting-edge technologies to expand access to university education cost-effectively.
