Govt Begins Mandatory Vetting and Training of In-House Security Officers in Learning Institutions

The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA), on Tuesday, February 13, announced the mandatory vetting of in-house security officers across all institutions of higher learning.

This nationwide vetting initiative will encompass both public and private universities, colleges, polytechnics, and vocational training centers.

Following the vetting process, security guards will undergo compulsory training. Subsequently, successful candidates will receive licensing to continue their roles as in-house security officers.

The decision for these measures stemmed from the rising incidents of insecurity within and around Kenyan universities.

During a meeting with PSRA officials, heads of security and institution authorities approved the vetting and training programs. They collectively discussed various strategies to enhance safety within higher education institutions.

A statement from PSRA highlighted the commencement of the mandatory nationwide security vetting, training, and licensing of all in-house security officers working in institutions of higher learning. The process will also extend to contracted private security officers and other security service providers.

Before initiating the vetting process, PSRA will host a sensitization forum at the Kenya School of Government on February 22. This forum, facilitated by the National Government through the Ministry of Interior, is open free of charge to all security officers.

PSRA has been advocating for the overhaul of the private security sector, emphasizing employee welfare. One of the proposed reforms aims to establish a minimum monthly wage of Ksh30,000 for registered security guards.
