In a rapidly changing job market, where practical skills are increasingly valued over traditional academic training, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET), Dr. Esther Muoria, has urged graduate trainees to consider pursuing technical courses to enhance their employability.

Dr. Muoria emphasized that possessing a skill is crucial for today’s youth, as it sets them apart from the competition that holds only general education.

“The employer wants to know what exactly you are coming into the industry to do for instance if you go to the building industry, they want to know what exactly you are competent in be it plumbing, masonry, tiling, painting and so on,” the PS said.

According to the PS, a mere academic certificate is no longer sufficient to stand out in a crowded job market.

Dr. Muoria highlighted the importance of TVET institutions in ensuring the productivity of graduates in the job market.

She says employers value hands-on experience and practical skills, making TVET graduates highly sought after.

Dr. Muoria urged learners to disassociate themselves from these negative vices, emphasizing that discipline and staying away from such distractions are crucial for success.

She says academic excellence alone does not guarantee success in life; instead, “it is the ability to remain disciplined and focused that paves the way for a prosperous future.”

Recognizing the seriousness of substance abuse among students, Embu North DCC William Owino mentioned the efforts undertaken to combat this issue.

Sensitization campaigns and the apprehension of culprits are being utilized to address the problem of drugs and alcoholism in schools.

The Principal of St Mark Teachers College-Kigari, James Muguna, highlighted the challenges faced by teacher training institutions due to declining enrollment.

In response to this issue, he requested the Ministry to consider allowing the establishment of a TVET branch within the college.

“As a result of poor enrollment, the institution was no longer able to sustain itself for lack of adequate resources and that expanding training opportunities away from the teacher training will definitely reverse the trend,” the principal said.
