Government to Hire 56,000 Teachers and Recruit an Additional 2,000 Tutors
President William Ruto has declared that the government will hire 56,000 teachers to fill staffing vacancies.
He stated that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will spend Sh47 billion on teacher recruitment.
Ruto also stated that Sh46 billion from this year’s education allocation will support a new university funding model meant to guarantee equal access to higher education for all Kenyan children.
The allocation includes Sh9 billion for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), with plans to hire an additional 2,000 tutors to improve TVET education.

According to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the state intends to fill the teachers’ shortage by hiring at least 116,000 new teachers. The government has employed almost 56,000 teachers this year.
He stated that they are working with the Teachers Service Commission to gradually transition contract teachers to permanent and pensionable status, but that funding restrictions have delayed implementation.
“This is because we appreciate the fact that achieving the recommended ratio reduces the burden on teachers, directly improving quality,” he went on to say.
In a move to bolster the teaching workforce, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the availability of 1,098 internship vacancies in Junior Schools across the country. The commission invites applications from qualified candidates interested in contributing to the education sector.

Interested and qualified candidates are encouraged to submit their applications online through the official TSC website, www.tsc.go.ke, specifically under the “Careers” section or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke. The deadline for application submission is set for the 15th of December, 2023.
To qualify for recruitment, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a Kenyan citizen.
- Hold at least a diploma in education with a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) and C+ (plus) in two teaching subjects in KCSE or its equivalent.
- Be a registered teacher with the Teachers Service Commission.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) disclosed that the upcoming internship program will span twelve (12) months, offering aspiring educators an extensive and immersive experience in the teaching profession.

Although the internship is not classified as a remunerative engagement, TSC has disclosed that it will provide a monthly stipend of Kshs. 20,000 to teacher interns assigned to secondary schools.
This stipend, subject to statutory deductions where applicable, aims to support and recognize the efforts of these interns during their tenure.
Upon successfully completing the internship program, the Teachers Service Commission will honor teacher interns with a certificate, recognizing their dedication and the skills they acquired throughout the internship period.
This certificate serves as a valuable credential as they progress in their teaching careers.
