Government Launches Toolkits To Teach Children On Climate-Smart Agriculture.
The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has launched a set of communication toolkits aimed at teaching children about climate-smart agriculture.
The program is part of the 4-K Clubs, which President Uhuru Kenyatta reintroduced in schools in June last year.
A children’s guidebook, a website, a set of instructional videos, and a set of climate-smart agriculture games were among the items released on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
According to Ms. Anne Nyaga, Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, these toolkits are intended to teach children how to become environmentally conscious and to take climate action while farming.
She went on to say that the toolkits were created because many young Kenyans want to farm but have nowhere to turn for proper information on how to practice climate-smart agriculture due to climate change.
The CAS spearheaded the development of the toolkits in order to improve the work of Kenya’s 4-K Clubs, which were reactivated by President Uhuru Kenyatta in June 2021.
She emphasizes the importance of teaching children about climate-smart agriculture in order to ensure that future generations are able to conserve the environment and begin conservation efforts at a young age.
“Investing in children at that age ensures that they have the right tools to fight climate change and pass them on to future generations as well,” she said.
The event was held in Nakuru County, at Egerton University in Njoro.
Representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP), 4-K Club members, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperatives were also in attendance.
These organizations provided strategic partnerships to ensure the successful development and launch of these toolkits.
Ms. Nyaga stated at the launch event for these toolkits that the book, titled ‘A Kid’s Guide to Climate-Smart Agriculture,’ was based on KSCAP’s Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Strategy: 2017-2026.

She also stated that the website provided children with the information they needed to take climate action, such as instructional videos, written text, images, and important contact information.
The Ministry of Agriculture reiterated its commitment to continue assisting Kenya’s 4-K Clubs, either through strategic partnerships in the creation of additional toolkits or through ongoing capacity-building efforts.
