Government Jobs: TSC Retains Position as Kenya’s Largest Employer as SRC Data Shows 3.1% Increase in Public Service Employment

Government Jobs: TSC Retains Position as Kenya’s Largest Employer as SRC Data Shows 3.1% Increase in Public Service Employment.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has released new data showing that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is the largest employer in the public sector in Kenya as public sector employment hit one million in 2024.

According to the report released yesterday, the total number of public servants stood at 1.023 million in 2024, a 3.1 per cent increase from the previous year.

SRC noted that TSC recorded the highest growth rate among public institutions. TSC workforce rose from 390,400 in 2023 to 410,700 in 2024, a 5.2 per cent increase.

Ministries and extra-budgetary institutions were the second largest employers, with their workforce growing from 233,600 in 2023 to 236,700 in 2024, a 1.3 per cent increase. This category includes various government departments such as administration, policy, finance and information and communications technology.

County governments also recorded significant growth in employment. SRC reported that county government employees grew by 2.3 per cent from 221,500 in 2023 to 226,500 in 2024. Under the devolved system of governance, counties added over 5,000 new workers in sectors such as health, agriculture and urban planning.

Other public sector institutions recorded slower but steady growth. Parastatals grew from 98,900 in 2023 to 100,100 in 2024, a 1.2 per cent increase. State corporations also grew, with employment rising from 48,600 to 49,200 during the same period.

SRC further reported that overall wage employment in Kenya, covering both public and private sectors, grew by 2.4 per cent, from 3.1 million in 2023 to 3.2 million in 2024. Of this total, private sector accounted for 2.2 million employees while public sector accounted for over one million.

The national wage bill continued to grow moderately, from 4.8 per cent in the 2022/2023 financial year to 6.27 per cent in the 2023/2024 financial year.Fiscal responsibility: 30 remuneration requests reviewed in Q1, Ksh411.7m, Ksh281.4m approved (68.4%)
