This year’s event was a success and helped promote Kisumu as a tourist destination.

Kisumu’s natural, geographical, and cultural variety rivals that of other Kenyan tourist spots.

As the festival concluded, students in school buses flocked to Dunga Beach on Lake Victoria for fresh tilapia.

Students from across the country wore traditional clothing from the Luhya, Luo, Maasai, Pokot, Mijikenda, India, and other cultures.

Bububu Primary School from Tana River County sang Igetha Bemba, a Kamba folk song, and Olmoran Secondary School from Laikipia performed Chemrye, a Pokot traditional song.

Young men and women sing both songs during pleasant events.

They are also played at marriages and young warrior ceremonies.

Joshua Mutua, a Standard 6 student from Miangeni Primary School in Machakos, wowed the audience with his solo verse Wendo kwa Syana, which urged parents to put down their phones and pay attention to their children.

Santa Maria Secondary School’s Keiyo traditional song, Tumdo, captivated DP Gachagua.

Narok High School from Rift Valley impressed with a moran-performed Maasai dance.

Abigael Morompi, Narok High School music teacher, stated this song honours Maasai morans as they become junior elders.

The school ranked second at the 2019 nationals at Kabarak University and represented Kenya in Uganda in 2017.

National Youth Service from Nairobi enthralled the audience with their Kamabeka Luhya dance.

Peter Kariuki Secondary School from Murang’a County performed the Isukuti dance in the Luo, Luhya, and Suba communities’ categories.

Popular among Kenyans, the Isukuti dance is a traditional festive performance among the Isukha and Idakho populations of Western Kenya.

It’s a passionate, fast-paced dance with drumming and singing.

Peter Kariuki Secondary School headmaster John Mwangi, who joined his students, said they practised Isukuti to teach and promote the Luhya culture nationally while being a school from Central Kenya.

Mombasa’s Kenya Navy Primary School, trained by Sergeant Amina Said, played a Borana folk song.

Kenyatta University music and dance adjudicator Sylvester Otieno said Kisumu schools’ performance was a success but asked future partners, sponsors, and the government to honour top performers beyond diplomas and trophies.

The “Kenya My Pride My Future” event celebrated the country’s uniqueness.

Peter Wanjohi, the festival’s chair, said it would help develop young learners’ talents and assured parents it was the right choice.

Gachagua praised the festival and urged schools to promote music.
