Funding Model and Open University Among Top Education Reforms, Says Machogu
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said that the government is working on a number of changes to make education in the country easier and better.
Machogu says that one of the reforms that will be put into place is a change to the way universities are funded.
A linked step is the launch of the Open University of Kenya, which will bring the university sector back to life and make it more effective.
The National Open University of Kenya will offer online learning and let more students sign up for classes, no matter where they live, how old they are, or if they are working or not.
The CS said that plans for starting the university are well underway and that the first group of students will start in September 2023. Garissa University will also offer students an easy and flexible way to study.
The Education CS spoke at Garissa University’s 4th graduation ceremony. He said that his ministry wants to make sure that colleges have the tools and environment they need to develop skills and change society.
“Beginning the next Academic year, university students will be funded on the basis of the actual cost of their programs. The funding will also be student-centered and will take into account the level of need of a specific student,” Machogu said.
He stated that the model would guarantee equal access to quality university education for all individuals, aiming to eliminate socio-economic barriers.
Additionally, he emphasized that underprivileged and vulnerable students would be exempt from any financial obligations associated with their university education.
Machogu said that the reforms will be a key part of the country’s growth and change. They are meant to improve service delivery, improve government, and make sure that universities in the country offer quality and useful education.
The CS praised the graduates for all of their hard work, discipline, and dedication to education.
