Funding Boost for TVETs: Sh28.3 Billion Allocated

The State Department for Technical Vocational Education and Training has been allocated Sh28.3 billion.

Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVETS) received an additional Sh7.6 billion in addition to the initially proposed Sh20.7 billion in order to increase enrollment and launch minor industries.

The Ruto administration is prioritizing TVETs and has signaled its intention to build training centres in all 290 constituencies and digital centers in every TVET.

Under the East African Skills Transformation and Regional Integration Project, the Ministry of Technical and Vocational Education and Training has been allocated Sh5.2 billion for student grants, Sh1.9 billion for the construction and equipment of TVET institutions, and Sh1.8 billion to increase access and improve quality.

A further Sh920 million has been allocated for TVET and entrepreneurship, and Sh1.5 billion has been allocated for promoting youth employment and skill development.

Prof. Ndung’u proposed allocating 749 million Kenyan Shillings to research, science, and innovation.

The State Department for Higher Education and Research has been allocated Sh128.6 billion, the State Department for Basic Education has been allocated Sh147.8 billion, andthe Teachers Service Commission has been allocated Sh323.8 billion.

The budget has doubled allocations for the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) and research and innovation.

This quantity represents an all-time high in support for the higher education sector, and it will be distributed among three prominent institutions.

According to the new financing formula, institutions will receive approximately Sh97,5 billion to support students receiving government sponsorship and those who will be admitted this September.

This is an increase from the previous budget of Sh91,2 billion.

In order to support student loans, financing to the Helb has been increased from Sh15.8 billion to Sh30.3 billion.
