Former Academic Giants in Central Region Reclaim Their Glory: 2023 KCSE Results

Former educational powerhouses in the Mt Kenya region reclaimed their former glory by achieving outstanding results in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

The announcement by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu brought joy to schools such as Kagumo High in Nyeri, Meru High, Nkubu High in Meru, Murang’a High, Nanyuki High in Laikipia, Moi High-Mbiruri in Embu, and St. Mary’s Girls Igoji in Meru.

Baricho High in Kirinyaga, Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls in Nyeri, Nginda Girls in Murang’a, Karega Day Secondary in Murang’a, Kabare Girls in Kirinyaga, St. Joseph Allamano Secondary in Nyeri, Makuyu Girls in Murang’a, and Kenyatta High School Mahiga in Nyeri also demonstrated excellence in the exams.

Accessing results from the Knec portal proved to be more convenient and cost-effective for school principals. Mwenda Rutere, the principal of Meru School, noted that the system’s efficiency allowed them to obtain results for over 400 candidates in just one and a half hours, a significant improvement from the past.

In Nyeri, Kagumo Boys emerged as the best-performing school, with 396 students achieving a mean grade of 9.306. The school recorded 21 A plain, 28 A- (minus), and 107 B+. Chief principal Silas Mwirigi attributed their success to a collaborative study approach between students and teachers, emphasizing the impact of extra remedial classes.

Two students, Ryan Thabuku and Kamore Villa, secured the top positions at Kagumo Boys with A plain scores of 84 points and 83 points, respectively. At Murang’a High, Phillip Muthami, the top student with a grade A, expressed his desire to pursue medicine, attributing his success to divine intervention.

Nanyuki High, a highly sought-after school, achieved a remarkable performance with 15 A plain and 72 A- (minus). Alex Nzeka, one of the top candidates, credited his dedication to studies to honor his parents who struggled to educate him.

Chief principal Solomon Koech highlighted the school’s improvement compared to the 2022 KCSE, praising the committed staff and disciplined class of 2023.

In Tharaka-Nithi County, Chuka Girls’ High School produced a top student in the region, Mercy Mutheu, who scored an A plain, while six others attained A- (minus). The overall performance showcased the academic prowess of these institutions in the 2023 KCSE exams.

After obtaining the results, Ms. Joan Muthomi Muchina, the principal, announced that all 270 candidates performed exceptionally well and are set to join university. Notably, the achievement includes one student with an A plain and six with A-, reflecting the school’s remarkable success.

In Kirinyaga, Baricho Boys High School demonstrated outstanding performance by producing 25 A plain, 86 A-, and 109 B+. This accomplishment positioned the school among the top learning institutions in the Mount Kenya region.

Benard Mwangi, the school principal, shared that out of the 449 candidates who took the KCSE last year, 400 (89 percent) qualified for admission to public universities. The school’s mean score also witnessed an improvement from 8.6 to 9.2 this year.

Moi High School Mbiruri in Embu showcased remarkable results with 8 A plain and 20 A-. This accomplishment crowned the school as the best learning institution in Embu County. Patrick Nderitu, the school principal, expressed satisfaction that the majority of the 2023 candidates are eligible for admission to public universities.

Individual achievements were highlighted, such as Ali Muzamili from Isiolo Boy’s High School scoring a B+, and Shamin Ahmed Yakub from Takaba Girls in Mandera County securing an A- (minus).

Moreover, Materi Girls in Tharaka Nithi recorded a mean score of 8.715, Christ the King in Meru achieved 8.8, and Miathene Boys secured a mean score of 7.8. The consistent success of these institutions underscores their commitment to academic excellence.
