Form One Student Death at Tumu Tumu Girls High School; What Happened?
The family of Joy Kahanya, who had recently secured a place at Tumu Tumu Girls High School in Nyeri, is now grappling with her sudden demise, barely a month after her admission. Joy, a 14-year-old Form One student, passed away on Monday morning following complaints of severe chest pains and headache the previous night.
Mr. John Kahanya expressed his dismay at not being informed about his daughter’s illness leading to her death and questioned why the school administration overlooked her deteriorating condition. He revealed that he was only notified about his daughter’s health on Monday morning around 6:30 am, despite her falling ill the previous day (Sunday) at noon.

Joy had sought medical attention from the clinical nurse after experiencing a headache, chest pains, and vomiting, according to her father. However, her condition worsened over time, and she even slept in her school uniform due to weakness.
It was later revealed that Joy had been complaining of illness since the previous Wednesday but hadn’t informed her teachers. She had confided in a fellow student, her school guardian, who advised her to seek medical help but failed to follow up until her condition deteriorated on Sunday.
On the night before her demise, Joy had asked a friend to wake her up at 4:30 am for morning preps. However, when her friend tried to wake her the next morning, she was unresponsive. The school authorities were alerted after an hour, and Joy was found unconscious.
Mr. Kahanya received an informal call from a teacher informing him of his daughter’s condition and her being rushed to the nearby PCEA Tumu Tumu Mission hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Unable to reach the school in time, he sent his wife and mother.

Relatives who arrived at the scene found Joy already deceased, sparking questions about whether she died at the school or in the hospital, suggesting a possible cover-up. Mr. Kahanya stated that Joy had no history of illness before joining the school and was due to go home for mid-term on February 29.
The Mathira West Sub-County Police Commander, Pixley Musyoki, confirmed that investigations were underway to determine the time and cause of Joy’s death. The investigation aims to ascertain the treatment provided by the school nurse and any potential misdiagnosis.
The school administration reported the incident to Tumu Tumu Police Station on Monday at 7:15 am, as documented in the Occurrence Book (OB). Joy’s body currently rests at the PCEA Tumu Tumu Funeral Home pending a post-mortem examination.
