Form One Placement Out Today
On Monday, pupils who sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations will know which secondary schools they will be attending.
The Ministry of Education is scheduled to disclose the form one placement as well as the results of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
Over 1,2 million pupils who took the KCPE in 2022 will be placed in 112 national schools, 776 additional county schools, 1,301 county schools, and 6,297 sub-county schools.
Others will be added to the 1301 private secondary schools.
According to the ministry’s formula, 10 of the highest-performing students from each of the country’s 290 sub-counties will be admitted to the national schools of their choice, for a number of 2,900 students who will be admitted to their preferred schools.
It adds that placement will also be determined on merit and equity, with affirmative action notably addressed for national schools and choice.
Nevertheless, some education stakeholders have criticized the computerized placement, arguing that it disadvantaged some pupils.
The Secretary-General of Kisii KUPPET suggests that the government might delegate the selection of Sub-county schools to teachers, allowing them to select students from schools in close proximity.
The KPSEA results that will be revealed on Monday will not determine which pupils will advance to junior high school, unlike the KCPE results.
A week from now, the Education Ministry is slated to provide an update on the continuing examination of primary schools across the time, which will determine which institutions will host junior secondary schools.
As teachers, we want to know what will happen to students if they say some schools are not fit to host JSS,” says Meru Central KNUT Secretary General Caxton Miungi.“
Also likely to be explained are whether junior secondary school students would have different uniforms than students in lower grades, and how much parents will be required to pay for their grade seven children.
Some parents have suggested that the second phase of the CBC should be eligible for the free education program for lower grades.
