An autopsy revealed that the form four student who died in Nakuru last week was shot once in the chest.

Whitney Atieno, 19, was allegedly shot by police officers on routine patrol on June 12 in Lake View Estate, Nakuru Town East constituency, sparking outrage among residents.

In the autopsy report, government pathologist Dr Titus Ngulungu stated that the bullet entered the abdomen through the front and exited through the lower back.

Dr. Ngulungu, who performed the autopsy on Thursday afternoon at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, reported that the body had no other significant injuries.

He described the wound’s morphology as that of a close-range discharge, estimated to be no more than 50 metres.

“As a result of my examination, I have formed the opinion that the cause of death was massive blood loss due to a single gunshot to the abdomen,” noted the pathologist.

Her aunt, Ms Eunice Ogol, the independent Policing Oversight Authority, IPOA officers, and human rights activists were present during the procedure.

Whitney’s father, Mr. Leornard Ogunyo, stated that he was unable to supervise her second-born daughter’s postmortem and asked her aunt to do so on his behalf.

The 54-year-old Matatu tout stated that on the day of the incident, he was at work at the showground terminus stage, where he had been working for the past two years, only to return home and learn of the tragedy.

He stated that he was informed that her daughter had been shot by police officers on patrol in the area and was rushed to the hospital while bleeding profusely.

Mr Ogunyo said he saw his daughter leaving the emergency room and being wheeled to the ward because she needed more medical attention, but they never spoke.

According to Mr Ogunyo, he was later permitted to visit her in the ward, where the two conversed, with his daughter telling him not to cry and assuring him that she would be fine.

Whitney, according to Mr Ogunyo, was a quiet and humble girl who never picked fights with anyone, even preferring to leave when someone wronged her.

He stated that she was an average student who aspired to be a doctor so that she could help her other siblings.

Mr. Ogunyo urged detectives to expedite investigations and apprehend perpetrators so that their relatives could receive justice.

The family begged well-wishers to assist them in giving their daughter a proper send-off, stating that she would be buried on July 2 in Ukwala Sub-County, Siaya County.
