Form 1 Placements To Be Released Tomorrow.
Pupils who took the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam last month will find out where they will be placed in Form One tomorrow.
According to the Ministry of Education, the selection process was completed last week.
Parents and their children have been anxious over the last two weeks, with some moving from one school to another in an attempt to secure a placement.
Some 1.2 million candidates took the exam, and they are expected to start Form One the following month, a week after schools reopen on April 25 for the first-term academic calendar.
Inmates, overage candidates, and candidates from refugee camps will be excluded from the placement.
According to Education CS George Magoha, the Form One selection process was free and fair.
He assured all candidates that they would be admitted to good schools based on their preferences and performance.
“Affirmative action will also be applied in the selection to ensure learners in slums areas and marginalised counties are placed in good schools,” said Prof Magoha.
Kenya High, Alliance Boys, Alliance Girls, Mang’u Boys, Pangani Girls, Starehe Boys, Kapsabet Boys, and Moi Girls, Eldoret are among the schools that many parents are interested in.
Some parents are also hoping that their children will be assigned to newly elevated national schools or extra-county schools in their areas.
Thousands of children have been caught off guard in previous Form One placement after failing to secure schools of their choice, despite having performed well and meeting the cut-off mark requirement.
This has resulted in parents moving from one school to another to seek transfers, only to have their children report to their secured schools and discover that no transfer had occurred.
In other cases, those who did not initiate their transfers have previously reported to their assigned schools, having paid full school fees, only to find their names reflected in a different institution by the National Education Management System (Nemis).
Last year, there were numerous reports of students being turned away from their assigned schools, prompting the Ministry of Education to step in.
This year’s placement is likely to see thousands of candidates who did not receive 400 or higher marks enroll in national schools, which have a capacity of over 30,000 students.
According to ministry data from the previous year, 36,254 candidates were placed in national schools, 201,077 in extra-county schools, 1.2 million in county schools, 1,827 in special needs schools, and 718,516 in sub-county schools.
In the 2021 KCPE exam, 11,857 candidates scored between 400 and 500 points, up from 8,091 in 2020, a 3,766 increase.
Another 315,275 candidates received between 300 and 399 points, compared to the 282,090 who received the same marks in 2020; and 578,197 candidates received between 200 and 299 points, compared to the 589,027 who received the same marks in 2020.
The ministry has been using affirmative action to place learners in national schools for the past three years, with all top five candidates of either gender from each sub-county being placed in top schools based on the choices they made during KCPE registration.
Last year, the majority of candidates who scored 400 or higher were placed in national and extra-county schools.
