Footsteps of Hope: Form One Girl Shows Up To School for Admission Without Shoes, Fees.
In spite of facing financial challenges, a determined Form One student recently sought admission at Ng’iya Girls’ High School, showcasing her resilience despite the inability to afford school fees.
The student in question, Freza Anyango Odhiambo, achieved an impressive score of 376 marks in her KCPE examinations at St. Teresa’s Girls’ primary school in Busia county.

Despite her accomplishment, Freza arrived at Ng’iya Girls’ High School with only 11 exercise books and a pen, lacking any personal effects and even shoes.
Accompanied by her mother, Winnie Onyango, who manages to make ends meet through menial jobs in Busia, Freza faced a challenging situation. Winnie had only been able to borrow a small amount of money to purchase the essential exercise books and pen for her daughter.
Principal Hellen Juma acknowledged the unconventional situation, stating that the school had no option but to admit Freza, despite her not meeting the typical requirements, given her challenging economic background.
“We were left with no choice but to admit the student even though she had none of the requirements since she comes from a poor background,” expressed Principal Juma.
Winnie Onyango, Freza’s mother, recounted her efforts to secure financial support for her daughter’s education, including applications to banking institutions and organizations offering scholarships.
However, all attempts proved futile, compelling her to bring Freza for admission without the necessary requirements, fearing the loss of this valuable educational opportunity.
Principal Juma expressed the school’s optimism that Freza will receive support from well-wishers, allowing her to continue her secondary education. The hope is that the community will rally behind Freza, ensuring she overcomes financial obstacles to pursue her academic aspirations.
