Fire Ravages Kivaywa Boys’ School Dormitories

A fire incident occurred at Kivaywa Boys, which is located in the Matete area of Lugari Constituency, resulting in the destruction of two dormitories. The cause of the fires remains unknown, and investigations are currently underway to determine the source of the flames.

Furthermore, six students have been arrested in connection with a separate dormitory fire at Kivaywa Boys’ High School in Kakamega County on Sunday night.

Kakamega County Police Commander Joseph Kigen confirmed that the students are being questioned as part of an ongoing probe into the fire that caused extensive damage to a dormitory housing 260 students. Beds, mattresses, and personal belongings were among the items destroyed in the blaze.

On the same day in the same county, another fire destroyed a section of a dormitory that accommodates 90 students at St. Peters Boys’ High School in Mumias. Although the cause of the fire has not been immediately established, the principal, Crisphinus Owino, suspects an electrical fault.

At Kivaywa Boys’ High School, the fire was first detected shortly after 7 pm in a dormitory known as Kilimo. Firefighters from West Kenya Sugar Company were called in to battle the flames, but they faced resistance from students who pelted stones at the fire truck, briefly blocking their access.

Amosi Chilai, the school’s board chair, stated that a meeting was convened to discuss how the 260 affected students would be accommodated after the incident. He expressed concern about the disruption of learning and assured that all options would be explored to address the situation.

Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, who is an alumnus of Kivaywa Boys’ High School, visited the institution upon hearing about the fire and attempted to provide assistance. However, witnesses reported that the students became unruly upon the arrival of the firefighters, leading to the school calling the police to contain the situation.

According to Mr. Kigen, the motive behind the unrest has not yet been determined. Both incidents of dormitory fires at Kivaywa Boys’ High School and St. Peters Boys’ High School have raised concerns and investigations are ongoing to establish the causes of the fires and the circumstances surrounding the events.
