Father Shoots Self After Daughter Falls Ill in Mukumu Girls School Food Poisoning
On the 16th of April 2023, a police constable by the name of Maurice Chisihavi allegedly committed suicide in his residence in the Siala Kaduol Police Station located in Gem Siaya County.
According to reports, the officer was distressed after discovering that his daughter had been hospitalized due to food poisoning at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls in Kakamega County.
The daughter is recovering from the incident, but it is believed that the officer was greatly affected by the news. Gem Sub County Police Commander, Cecilia Kemboi, confirmed the incident, stating that the officer shot himself in the chin, and the bullet exited the upper part of his head, killing him instantly.
“He shot himself in the chin and the bullet exited on the upper part of the head, killing him instantly,” Kemboi was quoted.
The police are investigating the matter to establish the circumstances leading up to the officer’s suicide. The food poisoning outbreak at Mukumu School resulted in the death of four people, including three students and one teacher, and the hospitalization of several others.
The incident caused the school’s closure and the transfer of Principal Fridah Ndolo, as well as the disbandment of the school’s board by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
Concerns have arisen regarding the mental health and wellbeing of individuals affected by the tragic incident at the school. Mukumu Girls alumni group has suggested that psycho social support be offered to students, teachers, and staff when the school reopens.
The group’s chairperson, Enid Busolo, said there were leadership and governance challenges in the school after the board chairman was sidelined in running the school.
The alumni had previously been represented on the board as one of the key stakeholders, but their seat was unceremoniously vacated without any official communication. The group is hoping to be reinstated in a constituted board.
