Examiners’ Pay Delay: MPs Want Treasury to Respect Timelines
Members of Parliament have directed their criticism towards the Treasury for the delay in disbursing funds allocated for compensating teachers who are contracted to supervise national exams.
The committee chairman, Julius Melly, emphasized that in the forthcoming supplementary budget, a top priority would be the allocation of resources to adequately compensate examiners for their services.
He stressed the importance of the Treasury disbursing funds to the National examination body in a timely manner to enhance the effective administration of examinations.
Melly urged the government to proactively plan the budget well in advance and allocate the requisite funds to the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) before the commencement of the examination period.
Due to the delayed disbursement of funds from the national treasury, according to Malava MP Malulu Injendi, KNEC has had trouble compensating teachers in a timely manner.
Malulu stated that teachers frequently engage in street protests to demand overdue payments, citing that the root cause of this problem lies in delayed disbursements from the treasury.
Melly Said, “We will ensure every examination being conducted prioritises the remuneration of examiners,” Melly said.
