Elimu Scholarships To Sponsor 18,000 Learners.
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has revealed that two cohorts of 9,000 beneficiaries each have been identified from vulnerable and needy children who took KCPE exams in 2020 and 2021 under the Elimu Scholarship.
“There are 18,000 children who will be sponsored under the Elimu Scholarship Fund. The President has also today accepted 9,000 more beneficiaries to be awarded under the same program. Said Magoha.
The Elimu program provides a four-year full-pay scholarship. Since the program’s inception in 2019, 18,000 deserving candidates have benefited.
“The beneficiaries could not have gone to the best national schools without the support of Elimu Scholarships. I appeal to the President to provide money this year to cover 9,000 scholarships under this programme to support needy children,” he said.
Magoha referred to the Elimu Scholarship Programme as one of the Jubilee government’s educational milestones and a boost to the 100% transition policy.
The Ministry of Education funds the scholarships, which are administered by the Equity Group Foundation with assistance from the World Bank.

“The programme has enabled the poor but intelligent students who could not access secondary education because officials would sell their positions to get an education. This programme will benefit the children and their families,” said Prof Magoha.
Since the program’s inception, which is funded by the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project (SEQIP), eligible candidates have been chosen in 110 targeted sub-counties and fifteen urban centres.
“I will be in the selection process to ensure that it’s the desperate children who get the scholarships,” said the CS.
Except for marginalized communities and children with disabilities, the ministry set the cut-off point for beneficiaries at 280 or higher. Initially, the ministry spent Sh3 billion to support KCPE candidates in 2019 and 2020.
