Eldoret varsity VC Prof. Teresa Akenga’s term at ends
Prof. Teresa Akenga’s controversial 10-year tenure as vice chancellor of the University of Eldoret (UoE) has come to an end.
Numerous strikes and opposition from North Rift leaders who alleged discrimination in the institution’s hiring marked Akenga’s tenure. Ismail Buro Hassan, chairperson of the university council, thanked Akenga in a letter to students and faculty for “her exemplary work” during her tenure.
“The growth has caused the recognition of the university both locally and globally as a premier institution of higher learning,” Hassan said.
Prof. Wilson Kipkoech Ng’etich has been appointed acting vice-chancellor as of 9 June, until a permanent replacement is found.
Professor Akenga is a trained chemist with extensive experience in training, research, leadership, and management, having held numerous academic and administrative positions in Kenya and Rwanda.

Furthermore, she is part of the Consortium on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South-Medical Research Council.
