Egerton University Staff Issue Seven-Day Strike Notice Over Unpaid Salary Arrears

Staff at Egerton University have threatened to strike after the institution failed to pay their salary arrears.

The University’s Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials, led by Chairperson Grace Nyongesa, issued a statement on Sunday, December 24, citing the university’s lack of transparency regarding the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), paving the way for the strike to begin on January 1, 2024.

The statement referred to the Court’s Ruling in Nakuru ELRC Petition No.E012 of 2022, highlighting that the court ruled that the university should demonstrate within 120 days, the end and beginning of the budget cycle, how they are implementing the provisions of the CBA.

In case of default, the statement noted that the Respondent Union is free to initiate a fresh strike action after giving the requisite notices.

The union insisted on the proper application of the 2017-2021 CBA salary scales, which included a ten percent raise, as well as the resolution of all deferred payments for academic staff.

UASU stated in a press release that, having failed to comply with the above Court Ruling, the Union hereby gives a seven (7) days Strike Notice.

The strike is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2024, and will continue until all Academic Members of Staff are paid the Correct 2017-2021 CBA Salary Scales at 10%, and all deferred pay is settled.

The upcoming strike follows what appears to be an ineffective discussion on December 22 between university administration and UASU representatives regarding the institution’s financial situation.

This development mirrors a prior seven-day strike in October, driven by unpaid salary arrears owed to all employees.
