A call has been made to individual universities to conduct their own entrance exams to prevent cheating and ensure that only deserving students are admitted.

The call was made during a public participation forum held in Kapsaret, Kenya, to deliberate on the country’s education system. The forum was attended by Members of Parliament, educationists, and members of the public.

The public hearings are ongoing, and stakeholders have been urged to come forward and give their views on the alleged malpractices in the KCSE exams of 2022.

According to Francis Mugo, a teacher, cheating is happening, and parents are paying hefty sums of money to schools to buy leaked exam materials.

Mugo proposed that universities should have their own entrance exams and not depend on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to determine which applicants qualify to join specific courses.

Mugo also urged the Ministry of Education to cease categorizing schools, terming it discriminatory, and pushing principals to bend their integrity to save the face of their institutions and jobs.

Mugo noted that teachers are under pressure to ensure their students go to universities, which is why some schools miraculously jump their mean score with a deviation of more than four points.

“It is suspect that students with good KCSE grades select great courses but drop by second year applying to defer or inter-faculty transfer,” said Nyamira Woman Rep Prof Jerusha Momanyi.

In conclusion, the public participation forum called for the overhaul of the education system to eliminate exam cheating and ensure that only deserving students are admitted to universities.

They proposed that individual universities should have their own entrance exams, and the Ministry of Education should stop categorizing schools. The residents also called for the abolition of fun fare in the announcement of national examination results.
