Education Stakeholders Call For Increased Secondary School Capitation Fee For Learners

Education stakeholders in Migori County are urging the government to augment the existing capitation per child in secondary schools, pointing to the escalating cost of living in the country. According to several school principals in Migori, the financial strain on running schools has intensified due to inadequate funds.

Mr. Joseph Ojiala, the deputy chairperson of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association for Suna West sub-county, emphasized that schools find themselves in a challenging position, accumulating significant debts to suppliers for both goods and services.

On Tuesday, Ojiala proposed an adjustment to the current capitation of Ksh.22,000 per child, highlighting the adverse impact of the high cost of living on educational institutions.

Suna West Member of Parliament, Peter Masara, echoed these sentiments during the distribution of bursaries totaling Ksh.30M to 4000 learners in Suna West. Masara appealed to the government, specifically through the Ministry of Education, to raise the capitation for both primary and secondary schools.

He revealed ongoing discussions at the national assembly budget committee level regarding the capitation issue.

In a related development earlier this month, the National Treasury disbursed capitation fees for schools, allocating Ksh.4.74 billion to primary schools and Ksh.16.2 billion to secondary schools.
