Education PS Bitok, KNUT Hold Talks on Promotion of Diploma-Holding P1 Teachers.
The Principal Secretary in the State Department for Basic Education, Julius Kibet Bitok, hosted the top leadership of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) for discussions focused on strengthening the teaching profession and advancing ongoing education reforms.
The KNUT delegation was led by National Chairperson Hon. Patrick Munuhe and Secretary-General Collins Oyuu. The meeting addressed several high-priority policy issues within the education sector, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusive and consultative reform implementation.
Central to the discussions was the acceleration of Parliamentary approval for Sessional Paper No. 1, which outlines the operationalization of Comprehensive Schools.
This transformative policy is intended to boost efficiency, learner progression, and cohesion across all levels of Basic Education. The leaders agreed on the urgency of formalizing the framework to guide nationwide implementation.
The meeting also examined the need to harmonize union representation for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to ensure their professional interests are fully protected.
In addition, both parties explored possible mechanisms to promote P1 teachers who have obtained Diplomas, recognizing their career growth and dedication to improving education standards.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to continuous collaboration with key stakeholders as part of efforts to strengthen the teaching profession. It emphasized the importance of such partnerships in enhancing the quality of education for all learners.
